5 signs you're ready to build your first van (and 3 signs you're not)

June 2026 · 4 min read

We get it. You've been watching YouTube van tours for weeks. Your phone's photo album is 40% van interiors. You've caught yourself measuring doorways and thinking "would a bed fit there?"

But there's a difference between wanting van life and being ready to build one. We were deep in that gap for months before we actually started Boxie. Here's what we've learned, and what we wish someone had told us.

5 signs you're ready

1. You've accepted that your first build won't be perfect

This is the big one. If you're still looking for the "perfect layout" or the "right way" to do everything, you'll never start. Every build has compromises. Ours has a shower drain we installed backwards (twice). The van still works. We still love it.

If you can say "I'll figure it out as I go" without a panic attack, you're ready.

2. You have a realistic budget and a buffer

Not just "I have €5,000 for the build." More like "I have €5,000 and another €1,500 for the things I'll forget." Because you will forget things. We budgeted for insulation but forgot about the adhesive. Budgeted for the sink but forgot the plumbing fittings. Every builder has this story.

A 20–30% buffer over your planned spend is the sweet spot.

3. You have somewhere to actually build

Sounds obvious, but this stops a lot of people. You need a space where you can make noise, make a mess, and leave the van parked for weeks. A friend's driveway, a rented garage, a farm. Anything works. An underground parking spot in your apartment building does not.

4. You know what van you want (roughly)

You don't need to have bought it yet. But you should know the ballpark: Sprinter vs. Ducato vs. Boxer, long vs. short wheelbase, high roof vs. low. If you're still torn between a minivan and a 7.5-tonne truck, you need more research time.

5. You have at least one weekend day free, consistently

A van build is a marathon. Ours took about 9 months of weekend work. If your weekends are already packed, you'll either burn out or your van will sit untouched for months. One solid day per week is the minimum to keep momentum.

3 signs you're not ready (yet)

1. You haven't sat in a single van in person

Photos lie. Videos lie. The only way to know if a layout works for you is to physically sit, stand, and lie down in one. Go to a van meetup, visit a dealer, find someone on Marktplaats who'll let you look. Until you've done this, you're building a fantasy, not a van.

2. You're doing it to escape something

Van life won't fix your job, your relationship, or your restlessness. It will give you a very small space in which to experience all of those things more intensely. Build a van because you're excited about where you're going, not because you're running from where you are.

3. You can't name three things you'd give up

A van build forces trade-offs. A bigger bed means a smaller kitchen. A fixed toilet means less storage. A full electrical setup means more weight. If you can't name three comforts you're genuinely willing to sacrifice, you haven't thought it through enough.

The best time to start is when you're informed and excited, not when you're perfect and certain. Nobody is ever certain. We definitely weren't.

If you're ready, here's what helped us

We built VanMate because we wished someone had handed us a kit on day one. Not a "course" or a 40-video series, but a no-BS collection of the stuff that actually matters: what to look for when buying, how to plan without overthinking, how not to go over weight, and every mistake we made so you can skip them.

If any of the "ready" signs above sound like you, take a look.
